When suffering from addiction, one of the worst feelings you can experience is the loss of control over your own life and actions. The feeling that things are spiralling out of control. Your family, your finances, career, health, body… are all are going south, and you feel powerless to stop it. This can be a painful experience that can crush your confidence and destroy your will to change things.
However, with the support of an accredited addiction and recovery coach, you can regain that control and put your life back on the straight and narrow.
Taking back control of your life and decisions
Understand your challenges and goals. What are your financial or fitness goals? What is your 3-month, 1-year or 5-year plan? When you have a clear vision to build, you become empowered to make lasting changes. Working towards a goal lets you deliberately choose your behaviour and attitude to achieve the goals you set for yourself. Each completed challenge will then become a boost for your self-esteem. Through coaching, you can start to define the life you want to lead, step out of your comfort zone and begin living a more intentional life.
Focus on what you can control. There are so many things that are out of our control. Other people’s actions, for example, are rarely something that we can influence. When we choose to focus on things that we can’t control, we invest a lot of time and energy feeling sad or angry – this is energy we could be spending more positively. Worse still, by dwelling on that which we cannot control, we can end up feeling even less in control of our lives.
Examine your daily routines with your coach and build positive habits based around what is within your circle of influence. Work on what you can change and leave out the rest.
Surround yourself with positivity. The information we consume, the friends we spend time with and the activities we perform play a role in how powerful we feel in life. When our environment is full of negativity, we can develop a negative mindset, outlook and expectations. We can lose confidence in our ability to advance and may even start blaming others for our own failures. By focusing on gratitude, we can build a positive mindset and build more proactive and productive routines.
Coaches help you reclaim control for your life’s direction by helping you identify and remove negative influences, replacing them with more positive elements.
